Events Autumn Term 2026

We start the semester with our Kick-Off meeting where we will welcome the new Global and Transregional Studies PhD students to the program. It is a perfect opportunity to meet your PhD fellows and the program head, Prof. Dr. Elize Mazadiego.

The event will also provide a platform to discuss the program and discuss your ideas for future courses and events. The kick-off meeting will be followed by a coffee break.

Lecture:

The seminar will investigate how dis:connectivity reshapes concepts such as circulation, mobility, translation, encounter, scale, agency, and world-making. Through close reading and discussion, participants will develop analytical tools for studying global and transregional processes without presuming seamless integration, shared temporality, or universal access to movement. The course is intended for PhD researchers working across disciplinary, geographic, and methodological boundaries.

Through engagement with the material agencies of oceans and islands, Karen discusses place-based embodied experiences, memories, affect and elemental motifs. She reflects on how humans are entangled in places, and how human actions, sustainable or destructive, reveal and reflect changes in immediate environments and the planet as a whole. 

Karen’s embodied practices enable insights about climate change and offer opportunities to expand the aesthetics of the Anthropocene, reimagining the more-than-human world as a practice of hope. In this presentation she combines photographs, video dance and forms of creative writing to prompt reflection and commitment to change.

Global History usually examines oceans as the great connectors of the modern world. This lecture begins instead at the moment when connection  fails – when a ship runs aground, founders, or sinks – and asks what  happens next. Historians have studied the insurance schemes and safety regimes that emerged to contain the risks of shipwreck, but far less  attention has been paid to the wreck itself, to lost cargo, to the navigational hazards a sunken hull poses, or to the symbolic weight many  wrecks acquire.
